Detailed Itinerary of the 7 Days Mountain Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail Hike
Day 1: Nyakalengijja to Nyabitaba hut
The 7 Days Mountain Rwenzori Hike-Central Circuit Trail starts after breakfast, transfer to the RMS headquarters for briefing about your hiking adventure. Begin at Nyakalengija then follow through the Bakonzo settlements to the Park’s Gate for registration before entry. Embark on your hike via the Central Circuit Trail through the thick tropical vegetation with dense bushes and high elephant grass. The walk takes about 8 km from Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut. Dinner and overnight at Nyabitaba hut.
Day 2: Nyabitaba to John Matte hut
Wake up have breakfast then transfer through thick shrubs and forest for 30 minutes to the Kurt Shafer bright which adjoins the Mubuku and Bujuku Rivers then later, move through the Bamboo mixed with montane forests and slippery moss covered rocks for hours. En-route the hike enjoy views of various species of birds and proceed to the Nyamulejju rock shelter for lunch. While here view Mount Stanley and Mount Speke when it’s a clear day. Proceed on your hike to John Matte Hut located close to River Bujuku where you have Dinner and Overnight.
Day 3: John matte to Bujuku hut
Wake up have breakfast then transfer traversing River Bujuku and through the forest to the lower Bigo bog which is swampy and home to the giant lobelias. This is the most challenging region while hiking Mountain Rwenzori since it requires you to jump from one Tussock to the next. Today however, there is a walk board on which you walk on to the end of the boggy area that makes it easier for trekkers. After the board walk, proceed through the remaining small boggy area with no boards to Bujuku Hut. While here view Lake bujuku, Mount Speke, Mount Baker and Mount Stanley. Dinner and Overnight at Bujuku Hut.
Day 4: Bujuku to Elena hut
Wake up have breakfast then transfer to Elena hut for 5-7 hours along sides of the upper Bigo Bog. Hike through the steep slopes of Lake Bujuku and while climbing, the trail ascends to the 4372 meter Scott-Elliot pass through more swamps and the thrilling Ground gully. Follow a steep section at the top of the gully using a metal ladder.
While here, the trail is divided into two with the left leading to Scott-Elliot pass descending to Lake Kitandara and the right to the Elena Hut. Dinner and Overnight at Elena hut.
Day 5: Elena hut (4563m) – Kitandara (3979m)
Wake up very early at 2:00 am then have breakfast then put on your warmest clothes/ gear i.e harness, warm hand gloves, headsock, headlamps, helmets and sunglasses for the day in ice. Hike to the top of Mount Stanley, Margherita Peak through Stanley Plateau. While hiking on steep rocky regions use ropes to help you move with instructions from the guide while on ice. When you reach the glacial area you will use crampons and ice axes.
After transferring for some hours on the Stanley Plateau glacier you will reach the bottom of the Margherita Glacier the most challenging region on Mountain Rwenzori. Hike through this glacier up to the top of Mount Stanley at Margherita Peak (5109m) and when you reach here enjoy views of Ireen Lake, Mount Speke. After, descend to Elena Hut for lunch then to Kitandara through the Scott Elliot pass Mountain Rwenzori’s most beautiful area. Dinner and Overnight at kitandara.
Day 6: Kitandara hut (3979m) – Guy Yeoman hut (3505m)
Wake up have breakfast then move through the base of Mount Baker which is slippery requiring to walk carefully. Follow the trail from Kitandara up the headwall to the base of Mounta Baker then south side of Mountain Rwenzori to Fresh Field Pass. From the Pass follow the muddy descent passing the rock shelter at Bujangalo at the base of the camp. The descent takes you 5-7 hours then you reach Guy Yeoman Hut where you have Dinner and Overnight.
Day 7: Guy Yeoman to Nyabitaba to Nyakalengija
From Guy Yeoman, descend to Nyabitaba through the bamboo forests along a slippery and muddy with little to hold on to path while balancing the vertical mud or steep rock. After a while, you reach Nyabitaba hut for lunch then proceed to Nyakalengija for the next 3 hours.
From Guy Yeoman, you will descend to Nyabitaba through the bamboo forests. The path down can be slippery and muddy with little to hold on to and requires careful balancing over the vertical mud or steep rock. After about 5 hours of trekking you will reach Nyabitaba hut where you will have a stopover for lunch. You will then continue to descend for more 3 hours to Nyakalengija.
When you reach Nyakalengija late in the evening, you can drive to Kampala or spend the Overnight in Kasese Town.
